Dogsled Racing

Sled dog racing is a sport that takes place in the arctic regions of the world. Sled dog racing takes place in the winter in Canada, Russia, the United States, Greenland, and a few European countries. The goal of dog sled racing is to complete to course in the least amount of time. The distances of races are 4 miles-1,000 miles, with races over 100 miles lasting multiple days. The premiere event of dogsledding is the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race that occurs over the course of nine to 15 days. The conditions for this event are usually brutal with heavy snowstorms and wind-chill temperatures dropping below -100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual race that takes place in March between Anchorage and Nome, Alaska. The course is 1,161 miles and follows the old Iditarod Trail dogsled mail route. The Iditarod is the most popular sporting event in Alaska.
